The death toll for border crossers in Arizona this since October 2006 is 199.
In July 2007, 46 people died crossing the desert of Southern Arizona.

In 2005-2006 there were 205 deaths. Of the 205 reported deaths, 49 were women.
There were children as young as 1, 3, 11, and 12. Many were under the age of 21.
Of the 205, 93, yes, 93 were recorded as UNKNOWNS.

I work as a Samaritan and an artist. My work is an expression of suffering, hope and the power of the human spirit.

As I’ve encountered men, women and children along the trails of Southern Arizona and in the custody of Border Patrol, I’m struck by simple things: their shoes, their tired eyes, their soft voices, and just how desperate one must be to undertake such a journey.

In my work I endeavor to create a bridge between my experiences and you, the viewer. In conjunction with Borderlinks (www.borderlinks.org) I will lead a JustArts week where we will look at the root causes of migration, we will travel to Mexico and we will walk some of these same trails in Southern Arizona where I find objects to use in my artwork. Together we'll work to create a piece for you to take home to use in expressing your experience to others. In spanning the void between the intellectual, statistical world of the border and the human suffering people are living every day.
